| Objectifs :

a. Course rationale The course aims at teaching the students in an autonomous and critical way to acquire insight in the cultural entity and mixture within the Dutch language area. b. Competences and competence levels to be attained (Miller) 1.2.2. He can settle into new subjects Competence level 1 1.2.4. Can work independently and takes initiatives Competence level 1 1.3.3. Is aware of the own culturally determined values Competence level 1 1.4.3. Is willing to enter into dialogue about values and norms Competence level 1 2.1.3. He makes sure to show he has a problem-oriented and creative approach. Competence level 1 2.5.1. Has an aptitude for meta reflection about the method and methodology he applies. Competence level 1 3.4.5. has knowledge of the different linguistic spheres concerning their history, geography, economy, culture and their political and social system Competence level 1 3.4.6. can apply cultural and historical knowledge and skills in diverse contexts (higher education, employment, personal development) Competence level 1 c. Programme Contents The heart of the course part is the diversity in the Dutch culture and its conceptualization (in the present and the past, internally and externally, levelling and polarising, officially and informally, consciously and unconsciously
). This double diversity is explored by means of all kinds of texts, quotes and images which are introduced by the lecturer and the students and which are critically discussed during the seminars and/or within the framework of individual tasks. Subjects which are taken into consideration: social compartmentalization, dealing with the past (including the literary or cultural ' canon'), attitudes with regard to language ( standard language,dialects, related anfd foreign languages) openness and delineation etc. |

| Prérequis :

a. EHSAL's general admission requirements are described in the education and examination regulations. In order for the students to start their courses in the best possible way, they are expected to have the preliminary knowledge, competences, and attitudes they acquired in the courses or modules listed below. Students should be able to apply them. Apart from a tolerable mastery of the Dutch language and a critical eye on the present and the past, no specific competences are required. A large diversity within the group of students (e.g. concerning mother tongue, nationality, training etc.) is welcomed, because this may contribute largely to the objective of this course part. b. | Dispositif :
|
|
During weekly meetings given topics are discussed and new ones are introduced. Before each meeting the students go individually in search of answers to the assigned tasks. Those answers are handed in at the beginning of the tutorials and form the basis for a group discussion. The feedback which will result from the group discussion can be used for the revision of the answers which will eventually be iincluded in a portfolio. |

| Evaluation :

First exam period The figure is consists of 4 parts. A quarter of the figure (25%) is stipulated on the basis of tasks which are handed in weekly, at the beginning of the lesson. The next quarter of the figure is stipulated on the basis of the active collaboration to the groupsdiscussies (25%, continuous evaluation by the lecturer) The third quarter (25%) is stipulated on the basis of port folio in which the answers to the assignments have been reworked as a result of feedback by the students and the lecturer. The last figure (25%) is stipulated by means of oral exam during which the lecturer asks questions about the documents read and the individual portfolio. Exam resits Portfolio: 50%Oral exam with discussion: 50% |
